Dad

“SEVEN LONELY DAYS” is adapted from an entry in my dad’s journal from 1953. He was born in 1932. Yes, he was a bonafide product of the patriarchy, and in accordance with that mindset, sized up the women in his immediate environment as a young man. The opinions expressed in this comic are not my own! I just drew it as I read it.

“BIRDSEED” is a recollection of childhood that he wrote late in his life, and mailed to me. He became very self-reflective in his latter years, as is evident in this story.

“THIS FRIGID HOUSE” is an adaptation of a journal entry from Christmas Eve, 1948, when he was 16 years old. When he saw this drawing, he told me that he would never have smoked cigarettes on the front porch—it was something he did in secret. But he acknowledged that I couldn’t have known that, and said the drawing should stay as I originally drew it.
